Environmental Priorities Coalition Legislative Workshop

Hear from legislators, environmental lobbyists, and citizen and activists regarding the community's Environmental Priorities.  Dozens of the State’s leading conservation organizations will also be there.  You’ll even have the chance to choose from multiple break-out sessions, like how to utilize social media or tips for writing a letter to the editor.

Reconnecting with Earth
Six Thursdays, Starting  January 21, 2010 
7 – 9 pm, Stillwaters Environmental Center (26059 Barber Cut Off Road; Kingston)

Ever think about why you care about the Earth? This 6-week Sustainability Discussion Course at Stillwaters offers an opportunity to explore the meaning of a deep connection to the natural world. The book of readings is from the Northwest Earth Institute which sponsors discussion groups all over the country. Topics include: Wild Nature, Shifting Paradigms, Nature and Spirit, The Universe Story, Ecopsychology and Bringing it Down to Earth with writings by Rachel Carson, John Muir, Starhawk, Janine Benyus and Wendell Berry to name a few. SUSTAINABLE FIRST MONDAY: COPENHAGEN? MUCH MORE!

The community is invited to Sustainable First Monday for a panel discussion on the what to expect in the climate change arena after the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Conference. Rev. Jaco B. ten Hove, a member of the Bainbridge Island Community Energy Taskforce, will be joined by Rachel Maxwell, Deputy Director of REIL (Renewable Energy & International Law), and Ron Swenson, founder of SolarQuest, who both participated in the conference.

Smart Growth is coming to Bainbridge Island!  Participants in a 3-day tour, “Smart Growth in Small Towns,” February 1 – 3, 2010, will study aspects of several communities in our area: the High Point neighborhood in Seattle, University Place in Tacoma, Mercer Island, Kirkland, Mill Creek, Snohomish, Langley, Port Townsend, and last but not least, Bainbridge Island.

Sponsoring organizations include New Partners for Smart Growth and the California-based Local Government Commission. Tour leaders are Dan Burden, founder of Walkable Communities, and Paul Zykofsky, Director of the Center for Livable Communities at the Local Government Commission.

Quoting from the organizers’ announcement: “The tour will draw a mix of planners, engineers, urban designers, city administrators, elected leaders, advocates, environmentalists and developers. On this tour you learn from one another, as well as your guides.”
