Inspiring Sustainable Practices in School
Local Bainbridge school, Voyager Montessori Elementary is committed to sustainable practices both inside and outside the classroom every school day. Voyager students compost their lunch waste (and feed their fruit, herb and flower beds with the compost); have built and maintain habitat for Mason bees and checkered butterflies; honored the historic use of the school property by reestablishing Marshall strawberries; and earned Northwest Backyard Wildlife status. Voyager’s campus is nearly 100% pervious, one of less than a handful in Washington State, thus allowing children to play on grass and in a forest of trees while providing habitat and open space for several species of native plants and animals.
Voyager also supports sustainability and global equality in their fundraising efforts too. This year the school is promoting sustainable practices though the sale and use of Chinook Books. Chinook Books are like a “green” Entertainment Book comprised of page after page of handy and helpful resources for the best ways to recycle, reduce your carbon foot print, do a home energy audit, and lots of other wonderful learning tools for adults and children alike. The remainder of the book is a wide variety of coupons and discounts for both Kitsap and King County merchants including T&C Markets, Blackbird Bakery, Vertical World, Ecohaus (formerly the Environmental Home Center) Seattle Art Museum, Woodland Park Zoo and many more. To see a full list of retailers go to www.ecometro.com. If you are interested in purchasing a book(s) you can contact the School at 206.780.5661 or drop by the School office at 8225 NE Highschool Rd. during regular business hours (8:00am-3:00pm). Each book is $20.00 and checks can be made out to VMES. These books make great gifts for people of all ages.
